The Workshop on Usage-based Theories in Second Language Teaching
On September 26th, 2024, Creative Language Center - Ton Duc Thang University successfully hosted an insightful online workshop titled "Applications of Usage-based Theories in Second Language Teaching." This event drew a diverse group of university lecturers dedicated to enhancing their teaching methodologies for English as a foreign language.
The workshop was led by Mr. Pham Huynh Phu Quy, a Ph.D. candidate from the University of Queensland, Australia, known for his expertise in language acquisition and usage-based learning theories. Mr. Quy opened the session with a compelling overview of usage-based theories, emphasizing how language learning is influenced by real-world usage rather than prescriptive grammar rules. He discussed key concepts such as frequency effects, construction grammar, and the importance of context in language acquisition. These frameworks provide a nuanced understanding of how learners can engage more meaningfully with the language. One of the highlights of the workshop was the practical application segment, where Mr. Quy shared specific strategies that lecturers could incorporate into their classrooms. Attendees were particularly enthusiastic about these interactive exercises, which can easily be adapted for various proficiency levels.
TDT Creative Language Center is committed to supporting the professional development of lecturers and plans to organize more workshops in the future. Events like this play a crucial role in fostering a community of practice among lecturers, enabling them to share knowledge and improve their teaching strategies collaboratively.
The “Applications of Usage-based Theories in Second Language Teaching" workshop not only fulfilled its goal of enhancing teaching practices but also ignited a passion for innovative language teaching among its attendees. The Creative Language Center thanks Mr. Quy for his valuable contributions and all attendees for their active participation, making this event a resounding success.
