“Co-Teaching Collaboration: Approaches and Strategies towards Effective Pedagogy” workshop

On the afternoon of 5th November, 2022, Creative Language Center of Ton Duc Thang University (TDTU) held a workshop with the theme “Co-Teaching Collaboration: Approaches and Strategies towards Effective Pedagogy” at building A (room A0101).

The attendees included Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Sy, the Center’s manager and more than 30 lecturers of the Center.

The keynote speaker of the workshop was Dr. Raqib Chowdhury - He is a Senior Lecturer in the Faculty of Education at Monash University, Australia. He taught in the Department of English, University of Dhaka from 1997 to 2004 and then joined the Monash Faculty of Education in 2009 upon completing his PhD in 2008. Dr. Raqib has published extensively in the areas of TESOL and ELT, culture and pedagogy, international education, social justice and identity. His publications include 6 books, including from Springer and Routledge. His latest book is The Privatisation of Higher Education in Postcolonial Bangladesh: The Politics of Intervention and Control (Routledge, 2021). Dr. Raqib has strong connections to Vietnam, has completed supervising several Vietnamese PhD students and delivering more than 20 presentations in Vietnam as a visiting scholar and a keynote/plenary speaker.

The seminar discussed the nature, typology, and implementational challenges of co-teaching collaboration. It focused on how language teachers and content specialists, or teachers from different subject areas or levels of experience can work in harmony in achieving shared goals and outcomes both inside and outside the classroom. It also focused on the notion of Differentiated Instruction and how this can be a vehicle to facilitate effective collaboration. Specifically, the presentation focused on a range of types and models of collaboration and how informed and practical choices can be made. The seminar also showed which type or model is most appropriate to teachers’ contextual specifics and their lesson objectives. The seminar was appeal to educators working at universities, language centres as well as in mainstream schools where collaborative teaching is expected and enacted.
